Joe Cole was a friend and roommate of Henry Rollins, who was killed at their house during a robbery in 1991. In the last days of Black Flag and the early days of the Rollins Band, he was a roadie and kept a journal, which he agreed to publish shortly before he was killed.

"Planet Joe" collects his writings and tour diaries from 1986 to 1987.
